Patchwork Musik

As a music teacher at a music school, I often teach a group of young musicians, but there is a lack of new music material for the flexible ensembles. Finding pieces suitable for both beginners and experienced ensemble players has been a challenge, requiring constant adjustments to the materials. To address this, I came up with the idea of creating a piece that could adapt to different ensembles, eliminating the need for frequent changes. Patchwork Musik was designed with interchangeable parts to facilitate versatile use and different interpretations with each performance. The goal was to give students a sense of ownership over the music they perform and inspire them to experiment with composition using the building blocks provided. Fortunately, the composer Mette Nielsen shared my enthusiasm for the idea and designed the fundamental elements for the piece. After the successful creation of the first piece, "Patchwork Musik - isfjeldet", it became clear that there was a demand for additional compositions tailored to different skill levels. Two more pieces were then developed: "Patchwork Musik - Tjaldur" for the youngest students and "Patchwork Musik - Sandflugt" for students at a higher level.

All three compositions in the Patchwork Music series are now available through a collaboration with Edition-S.
